Fairchild PT-19 Cornell

The Fairchild Cornell PT-19 USAAC Serial AC40-2538. The aircraft was delivered via rail to the Spartan School of Aeronautics, Tulsa, OK which operated as a primary training facility for the AAC. Spartan were one of the major suppliers to cadet pilot training in the US during WW2. Up to 14,000 cadets were trained. Here our Cornell amassed 1130 hours flying time training US, UK and Commonwealth pilots for operations in WW2. Did you or your relative learn to fly there? If they did we would like to hear from you. Please click on the Contact Us tab.Towards the end of hostilities the aircraft was allocated for lend-lease to the Nationalist Chinese. The Chinese cancelled the order and the aircraft was purchased by PFC (Private First Class) Solberg on April 18th 1945 from the 'Reconstruction Finance Corporation'. It is unusual for serving personnel to be added to the record card in this way. Thank you to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum - Archives Division for their research of the Cornell's war time career.Imported from the USA as N33870 in the late 1980's most of the restoration work was done in the 1990's. Recently the aircraft has been on the books with Warbirds of Great Britain and JME Aviation. CFMC acquired '2538' in early 2007 to complete restoration to flying for the first time in 30 years. This will then be the only airworthy PT-19 in the UK! For information a summary of this history and information for airshows please click on the pdf file.
